Our mission

No recipient or caregiver should have to face this journey alone.

The Feragotti Foundation helps organ transplant recipients and their families navigate the financial, practical, emotional and legal challenges that can accompany transplantation and long-term recovery.

Brian received the gift of a new heart on June 24, 2013. His family’s experience became the inspiration for a foundation devoted to helping others recover, adapt and live as fully as possible, with dignity, hope and support.

A gift that inspires giving.

The Feragotti Foundation was established by the family of heart-transplant recipient Brian Feragotti. Its mission grew from the medical, financial, emotional and practical challenges Brian and his family experienced throughout his transplant journey.

On June 24, 2013, Brian received the extraordinary gift of a new heart. Just two months later, he underwent surgery to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm. What first appeared to be a superficial MRSA infection developed into a severe and extensive infection.

Surgeons were required to remove portions of Brian’s costosternal and sternoclavicular joints, muscle tissue surrounding his sternum, and part of the sternum itself. Brian remained in a coma for nearly two weeks and faced an exceptionally difficult recovery.

In the years that followed, Brian continued to face chronic illness and serious complications, including a pulmonary embolism, numerous digestive-system conditions requiring repeated hospitalizations, and facial reconstruction with three titanium plates following a separate traumatic injury.

His family’s experience revealed just how much strength, knowledge and support can be required long after transplant surgery is over.

Why it matters

The journey does not end when surgery is over.

Brian was fortunate to have a devoted family, a strong support system, and essential legal and financial arrangements in place. Many transplant recipients and caregivers do not have access to those same resources.

Receiving an organ is an extraordinary gift, but transplantation can also be a physically and emotionally traumatic, life-changing experience. Recipients and families may face years of medical care, financial strain, uncertainty and emotional challenges.

Our purpose is to help recipients not merely survive transplantation, but recover, adapt and live as close to a normal life as possible.
